A brief summary of the match, from the ATP site: France’s Gael Monfils silenced the legion of Cypriots backing Marcos Baghdatis on the Rod Laver Arena, by knocking out last year’s Australian Open runner-up in four sets on Wednesday.
Monfils held his nerve to beat fellow Paris resident Baghdatis 7-6(5), 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 for a place in the third round against a familiar face, Richard Gasquet, who cruised past American Amer Delic 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 earlier in the day.
Victory over Baghdatis represents the first time since June 2006 (Queen’s Club-London) that Monfils has won back-to-back matches at ATP-level. Monfils is currently ranked No. 59 in the ATP Rankings.
The 20-year-old won the battle of the former Australian Open junior champions in two hours and 37 minutes. Monfils, the 2004 junior titlist, hit 11 aces and 30 winners with 38 unforced errors.
Baghdatis, who lost to ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer in last year’s final, converted just three break point opportunities and finished with 52 unforced errors to his name. The 21-year-old won the 2003 junior title and is currently No. 11 in the ATP Rankings.www.atptennis.com/1/en/news/news2.asp

:-((((( Only in 3rd set Marcos played his match with great shots and service. In the last he wasn't that bad but Monfils was before every ball.........really strange despite the fact he had an "injury" in 3rd set........ If I remember right the tiebreak lost because of double fault anyway.......

Well, I finally saw the match on tape. Monfils has been better today. Marcos made too many errors and couldn't seize all the break opportunities. He played really aggressive, with his serve back (yes!!) only during the 1st half of the 3rd set. Too sad it didn't last.......I think he totally lost his timing and concentration when Gaël took that timeout. The 1st set had showed good things, with Marcos being down 1 break and Monfils having opportunity for a double break. Marcos finally could come back. Hope was still there. But losing it after the tiebreak obviously left some frustration at the beginning of the 2nd set. Anyway, those 2 players appreciate themselves a lot. The handshake was friendly and that was nice to see.

Marcos & Konstantinos won their match over Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 6-2. Which is a very good win as their opponents are a good doubles team. I've seen them play in Metz last year. So all congrats to them.

Our hopes were high for this match.....never mind, next time now Kostas gave an interview in a greek sport website and he said that he enjoyed these matches with Marcos, hehe.If he'll be in, at another big tournament he will try to play again as partners. He said too that the atmosphere in court was great, many greeks supported them.
I'm trying to find more photos

Thanks for the updates Christos. We'll be looking forward to their partnership again.
I'm working on translations of articles/interviews about Marcos that were released recently, right at the beginning of this AO, in the French press.
