It's Marcos' first clash with Kei.
Kei is a promising player, but the teenager failed to demonstrate his potential this year. Well, apart from his win over Berdych in Brisbane... His poor results were somehow expected as he suffered a slight injury to his arm at Heineken Open.
It would certainly be interesting to see a match that involves two players with completely different styles of play...

Marcos defeated Kei Nishikori 7-5 6-3. I had to watch the SB since no free live streams were provided... Marcos broke Kei's serve in the 6th game of the first set, only to be broken back in the 7th game. The same scene was repeated in the 8th and the 9th games. It was in the 9th game when Marcos failed to serve out for the set. Unfortunately, he couldn't hold serve and Kei made it 5-4. In the 11th game of the first set Marcos saved 3 break points hitting 2 aces... Phew, holds finally... and managed to break Kei's serve in the 12th game. Took the set 7-5 in 50 minutes. Marcos' level of play seems to have lifted in the second set. He was broken once (in the 5th game of the 2nd set), but broke Kei's serve in the 6th game and the 8th game. In the 9th game, Marcos holds to 15 to consolidate his break, phew!, and served out for the victory. Set 6-3 to Marcos. In 33 minutes. Unless I'm mistaken, Marcos dropped just 5 points on his serve in the second set. Pas mal! Good win for Marcos as Kei is a talented player known for his fighting spirit. Hopefully this win will boost his confidence for the tricky second round match. He will face either Querrey or Haas.

Thanks for your report about the match. I know that watching a scoreboard isn't exactly the best way to follow a match, and to report about it. So thanks for it

Thanks for your report about the match. I know that watching a scoreboard isn't exactly the best way to follow a match, and to report about it. So thanks for it I guess you're right, Choupi. I missed the chance to witness hilarious scenes. www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/feb/18/loss-puts-dent-in-comeback-plans/Those darn cell phones During his first-round loss to Marcos Baghdatis, Japan's Kei Nishikori had a teenage moment ... twice. Nishikori, who last year became the first player from his country to finish in the top 100 in 13 years, had his cellphone ring twice during the match, a musical ringtone that forced chair umpire Norm Chyrst to summon Nishikori to the sidelines to shut it off. ''I just bought a Blackberry ... and I didn't know how to turn it off,'' Nishikori said. ''I felt bad. (The second time) I just took the battery out.'' ============================================ lol Sam Querrey is Marcos' second round opponent. Order of play will be released later tonight. I'm moderately optimistic about the outcome.
