Maria's report on Nathii's site: www.tennisalternative.com/news.php?readmore=465 "... And after…YES, IT HAPPENED! Kubot beat Baghdatis! In style - 6:4, 6:1. He played a lot of drop shots that Baghdatis just couldn’t get, produced great forehands down the line and even came to the net several times. In the first set, they couldn’t hold serves, as finally Kubot held his last one and won the set 6:4. In the second, he didn’t give Baghdatis a chance. He even came back from 0-40 at his serve and after this, he rolled over Baghdatis like a jeep. The stands were all silent and the only clapping and shouting was me. In fact, I was running to the court and back - down the stairs from the office, watched the three games, ran back, wrote the score to the computer, locked the office and ran back. The supervisor was laughing every time he saw the happy smile on my face when I reported the score to him. The others were giving me weird looks when I was whispering in Polish, clapping hands or nervously clinching my fingers to the fence. The director was nervously walking around, the photographer came back when Kubot was leading 3-1 in the second set, saying “Hopeless, he will lose!” So yes, Baghdatis got millions, lost in singles and doubles and he can have a nice holiday somewhere. I can’t believe they actually thought he would make some effort. Or well, he did make some – he tried to run to one of those drop shots, and almost killed himself when he fell.
After the match Kubot came to the office and asked for water and towels. The supervisor gave him water, while the tournament director gave him a hating look and went with him to get him some towels. Now I think that when Kubot was waiting in the corridor, instead of congratulating and shaking hands with him I should have warned him – the director was so angry that he may have poisoned the towel. So let’s hope he will be still alive tomorrow. And me too…with the flu."Maria Nathii on April 28 2009 23:44:33
