Source: AFPMARCOS Baghdatis has given his sponsors one of his four smashed tennis racquets as penance for his on-court antics.Bank of Cyprus managing director George Tacticos asked if he could have a racquet to be auctioned off for charity after getting a visit from the player last week. "We joked that perhaps everything should be bolted down and anything breakable should be put away. In all honesty though -- he is just a nice guy; friendly and genuine," Tacticos said. =========================================================================== by the way, i had no problem with Marcos' mini-meltdown. i actually found his way to express his frustration and relieve some tension pretty comical.
oh, and it's so ironic that Taktikos, the Bank of Cyprus' managing director surname, means "fit for arranging/set in order" in Greek.

This story with rackets turns against Markos and I am not talking about breaking the rackets (everybody does this) BUT THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY TECHNIFIBRE read this www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbercovici/2012/01/19/did-loss-of-sponsorship-spark-tennis-stars-tantrum/The issue here is that after this announcement Markos is in risk. We all now that he was using same racket without logo. But after this announcement their relation hits red. He is running the risk to find himself without a racket in the middle of the season. Imagine if TECHNIFIBRE decides to DISCONTINUE this model - What is going to happen (knowing that Markos was testing a Dunlop racket for a month but at the end he did not like it) Marcos Baghdatis's broken racquet recycled for charity auction January 25, 2012 12:00AM Marcos Baghdatis smashes another racquet in an extraordinary outburst during his loss to Stanislas Wawrinka on Margaret Court Arena. This is one of the four, either number 3 or 4 that was smashed. Will be auctioned for charity as stated in the Herald Sun article. No makers marks anywhere on the racquet.

^^ that's Fisher. thanks for posting it, makri. apparently Marcos cannot seal a racquet sponsor since last December. just wondering if he gets free racquets from Fischer. by the way, switching sticks mid-season could be detrimental to his on-court results. hope he gets a good deal at the end of the season.

When I said there were no makers marks I should have been more specific, I.e. nothing from a manufacturer such as Technifibre, Fischer, etc. It did have on the inside of the neck of the racquet "custom designed and built by...." and some guys name, I can't remember what name but I'll try and get some more photos later on in the week.

gulftelugu.com/2012/02/26/baghdatis-confident-of-halting-djokovics-run/Baghdatis confident of halting Djokovic’s runFebruary 26th, 2012 in gulf newsCypriot Marcos Baghdatis has promised to stand in the way of reigning three-time Dubai champion and world number one Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Duty Free Men’s Open, which gets under way tomorrow. “When I am in the tournament I don’t see Novak winning,” Baghdatis told Gulf News on the sidelines of the official draw held at the Majlis of the Dubai Tennis Stadium here yesterday. “I am here to win and I don’t care if he is there. I doubt he can win here this week, not when I am here at least.”Baghdatis, the son of a Lebanese who migrated to Cyprus and married a Greek-Cypriot woman, is one of the few colourful personalities on the men’s ATP Tour. And he makes no apologies for it either. “It’s good to have one’s own personality as it shows one’s upbringing. I don’t know if we need some more or not. You will have to ask the fans about that,” Baghdatis said. “Involving spectators is part of my personality and I am just doing something that comes to me naturally. It’s the way I have grown up in life. And I would never change anything in the way I interact with the people.“Novak is doing that very well and he is number one in the world. Anyway, I don’t do it for the people, but I do it for me because it is nice to do it. I love tennis and that’s the way I love to play the sport. And yes, it does motivate me a bit.” InjuriesBeing a runner-up at the 2006 Australian Open and a semi-finalist at Wimbledon the same year saw Baghdatis climb to a career-high eight in the world. Injuries then pulled him lower down the rankings, but by 2010, he had made enough progress to once again take on top players like Roger Federer, against whom he saved three match points in three sets to win in the third round at Indian Wells. Also in 2010, Baghdatis went on to beat No 1 Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open, only to fall to Federer in the semi-finals. In Dubai, he is up against a strong first round opponent in the form of fourth seed Jo-Wilfred Tsonga — a semi-finalist in Marseille yesterday. “It will be a tough first match for sure, but I am ready for it,” Baghdatis said. “When you come to a tournament like this, you know you have to beat everybody. There is no option, but one has to find a way to win and go all the way.”======================================================================== Marcos is shamelessly trolling. is anyone else getting the vibes?

Marcos was defeated by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Centre Court in Dubai.
today he plays another Frenchman...======================================================================== www.sport360.com/article/who-needs-coach-jo-wilfried-tsonga-shines-dubai-duty-free-tennis-championshipWho needs a coach? Jo-Wilfried Tsonga shines at Dubai Duty Free Tennis ChampionshipFeb 28, 2012 by Reem AbulleilNo fuss: Tsonga showed no ill effects of his little preparation to blast past Baghdatis.Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continues to reach new highs in his career despite not having a coach by his side. The 26-year-old, who broke the top-five for the first time in his career this week, split with his coach of seven years - Eric Winogradsky - last April but he appears to have a perfect handle on things on his own. He convincingly overcame a tough first rounder on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship with a 7-6, 6-4 win against former world No.8 Marcos Baghdatis, and Tsonga revealed an interesting reason on how he survives without a coach. “There is two people inside me, so one for coaching and one for play,” joked the Muhammad Ali look-alike. “Yeah. But anyway, I have some people who help me a lot outside of the court. I mean, they’re not with me every time, but I know I can count on Guy Forget, my captain in Davis Cup who give me a lot of advice. “Because he was good before, and I think he know a lot about tennis. Last year I had some advice from Andre Agassi. There is a lot of other players. I will not say their names, but there is people around me who give me advice.” Both Tsonga and Baghdatis are former Australian Open finalists and the match was as tight as everyone had expected it would be. Both players came out blasting in the opening set which went on serve until Baghdatis got his hands on three break points in game number nine and the Cypriot only needed one when as Tsonga, who was slightly less solid than his opponent up to that point, fired a forehand long. But Baghdatis failed to serve out the set as Tsonga promptly retaliated with nerves of steel, and the Frenchman did not falter in the following game serving monstrous 200+km/hr serves to improve from 4-5 down to 6-5 up. Baghdatis held to force a tiebreak but the serving extravaganza continued from Tsonga, who fled with the breaker 7-2. The second set again saw brilliant offensive skills from both players but it was Tsonga who took the initiative breaking for 3-2 and surviving a gruelling sixth game where he went down 15/40 to eventually open a 4-2 gap. Baghdatis continued to fight, forcing more break points and saving two match points in the final game, but Tsonga ended things on his third match point when his opponent netted a forehand. “It was a tough challenge, but I like it. I play tennis for challenge. Today it was one challenge, and I think I was good,” said Tsonga, who only arrived late on Monday and barely managed six hours of sleep. “Because it was not easy. Not a lot of energy. Without this energy it’s difficult to play. But I was there mentally and I did it, so I’m really happy. I hope I will have time to recover tonight and tomorrow I will feel better.” The Le-Mans native next takes on Czech world No.96 Lukas Rosol.

and here's Jesse Pentecost presenting a psychological analysis of Marcos. also, a perfect example of using a few words to say a lot. ========================================================================= www.thenextpoint.com/?p=1776Solid Gold TrousersFebruary 29th, 2012 by Jesse PentecostDubai, First RoundThe lowest seed at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships this year – Juan Martin del Potro – would have been the top seed at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis last week, if only he had shown up. I might be biased, but the Dubai draw seems sturdier, despite the fact that both tournaments are of putatively equal standing. Perhaps you are as surprised as I was to learn that Dubai boasts even greater prize money. This helps explain the presence of eight out of the top ten players – only the Spaniards are absent, toiling or gambolling elsewhere – since to a man they have refused any appearance fee [citation needed]. Scurrilous rumour has it that each man was gifted a pair of solid gold trousers upon arriving, but this can surely be discounted. Dubai’s field is always strong. It’s just the honest thrill of competition that draws them. This year it is stronger and more thrilling than ever, worthy of the Masters events soon to commence in North America. There were absorbing matches from the very outset, which I found almost as exciting as the fact that I could enjoy them before midnight, which is a rare treat for the Australian tennis fan. A shimmering blue vision before bedtime, punctuating these long arid months of huddled torpor beyond the witching hour – in every sense Dubai is an oasis. It’s an effect reinforced by the coverage, which never wastes an opportunity to send a helicopter past yet another 57 star hotel, each a madman’s confection soaring into the immense Arabian vault. Clearly, we’re not in Tennessee anymore. ..................... (4) Tsonga d. Baghdatis, 7/6 6/4Am I alone in sensing a certain melancholy in Marcos Baghdatis these days? He seems to have lost his exuberance, his love of the competition. Of course, anyone sharing a court with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is likely to seem dour in contrast. The Frenchman is mighty in his ebullience. After a tight first set – Baghdatis served for it, hopelessly – Tsonga ran away with the match. Like Djokovic yesterday.

from Marcos' official site:baghdatis.com/articles/view/marcos-karolina-welcome-baby-baghdatisMarcos & Karolina Welcome Baby BaghdatisSunday, 21 October, 2012Marcos may have endured a disappointing semi-final defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Saturday at the If Stockholm Open, but he was greeted with the news afterwards that his wife Karolina had given birth to the couple’s first child, a baby girl. Both Mum and Baby Baghdatis are doing well and we expect to have more details for you soon. Contesting his second semi-final in three weeks, Marcos gave the No. 8-ranked Tsonga a stern test, pushing the Frenchman to a third set before needing to retire with a left groin injury when trailing 6-4, 4-6, 5-2. Marcos will not be competing at the Swiss Indoors Basel next week, but is set to return for his last tournament of the season at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, beginning Monday, 29th October. Stay tuned to www.baghdatis.com for updates and send your well wishes to Karolina and Marcos on the birth of their baby daughter to contact@baghdatis.com.
