Time on clay is over. Marcos will start playing on grass, a surface that suits him very well, next week in Halle. Hope he's had a good rest after the French Open and that he's ready, like Getta would say, to kick some butts... Official site of the event: www.gerryweber-open.de/en/

www.gerryweber-open.de/en/current-news/news-gerry-weber-open/?id=4109&monat=06&jahr=2010Federer to face Nieminen; tough tasks for GermansThe draw for the 18th GERRY WEBER OPEN has provided tournament favourite Roger Federer with an unpredictable opening opponent. The German participants, meanwhile, have almost all tough tasks ahead of them. Philipp Petzschner faces former Halle finalist Marcos Baghdatis. ------------------------------------------------------------- ... Overall, though, the German participants in the 18th GERRY WEBER OPEN in Halle (Westfalen) were given really tough draws: Philipp Petzschner, who actually performed the draw himself, has a difficult opener against Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis. “That is certainly a pretty tough task,” said Petzschner, “but obviously I want to do all I can to be here for as long as possible.”... ======================================================================== win this whole d**n thing, Marcos!

www.gerryweber-open.de/en/current-news/news-gerry-weber-open/?id=4158Petzschner stuns Baghdatis in opening matchAfter a wobbly opening, Philipp Petzschner of Germany turned things around to beat Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 6-3 to send the second seeded player out of the competition on day one of the GERRY WEBER OPEN. ------------------------------------------- There was something not quite right about Petzschner’s game to start with. Nothing really came off and the errors came one after the other. His serve regularly landed in no-man’s land and it was no surprise, therefore, that he gave away his first service game to Baghdatis. “I have been playing a lot of double faults recently - even in training,” said a rather flummoxed Petzschner afterwards. That will remain a puzzle to him. In addition, he even got his two Hawk Eye challenges wrong: the oppenent’s shots landed in both times, even if it was tight. The 26-year-old needed a bit of time to find his game, mainly due to the lack of match practice. “It always takes a bit of time to get used to your first game on grass,” he said. “That is not just the case for me, but for every player,” he added, not wanting to make any excuses. Since his game was so error-ridden to start with, his re-break to make it 4-4 and subsequent break to win the set was particularly surprising. In the second set, he was close to losing his serve again, but this time he was able to hold off the number seven seed. And not only was his own serve starting to improve - Petzschner was looking overall more assured and more concentrated and he was soon able to race into a 3-0 lead. He played half an hour of “probably the best tennis on grass I have ever played.” The rallies were getting increasingly longer, and consequently more exciting. ================================================================ also, Petzschner posted this on his twitter: twitter.com/PetzscheGreat win today...proud of myself! about 3 hours ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

also, nice that an Indian of Hindu faith plays doubles with a Pakistani. sports between and beyond politics, Bopanna and Qureshi that is.

www.cyprustennissociety.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=268Marcos (returns to Cyprus) for a mini-breakTuesday, June 8, 2010, 11:00 Marcos Baghdatis returns to Cyprus tonight. Our champion has withdrawn from the doubles where he was teamed up with the Belgian Olivier Rochus and returns to Cyprus, together with his coach, to continue his training. Marcos will train on the new court at his house in his hometown of Limassol and on Saturday will take the airplane to the Netherlands to return to action at next week's UNICEF Open. ============================================================ yet, a few important details remain open to answer. for instance, the courts at Marcos' house are normal hard courts, not grass courts. anyway, hope he didn't pick up any minor injury. he just needs to snuggle up against his parents' shoulders to overcome his nerves to be able to get into the zone more often and win more matches... and, as i've already said elsewhere, Marcos feels a bit of cool fresh air coming through every time he steps on the soil of Cyprus and his senses are bathed in the deepening pulsation of that longing for renewal...
