About the match against Simon: The pair had come face-to-face four months ago in the final at Marseille, with Simon getting the better off his opponent back then. Not this time, though, as the Cypriote did not waste any time and broke his opponent's serve in the first game. Simon returned the favour to make it 2-2 but Baghdatis stood tall and won four of the next fives games. He stormed to an early 3-0 lead in the second set and later converted his first match point.
After Federer pulled out due to fatigue following the exhausting French Open final against Rafael Nadal, many consider Baghdatis the top favourite to win the tournament this time out. While the 21-year-old did not want to comment on Federer´s withdrawal, he certainly fancies his chances to succeed him as the champion in Halle. "If I play well I can win every match," he said.www.gerryweber-open.de/en/current-news/news-gerry-weber-open.html?id=1749&monat=06&jahr=2007

From ATP.com: Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis dismissed a stern challenge from Robin Soderling on Thursday in Halle, posting his first career victory over the Swede to secure a spot in the Gerry Weber Open quarterfinals.
Soderling seemed poised to notch his third straight win over Baghdatis after outlasting the Cypriot in the tie-break of the tightly contested first set, but the No. 8 seed came back to win 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-3 as he converted four of his seven break chances.
Baghdatis, who reached the quarterfinals for the sixth time this season, continued to show the grass court form that carried him to back-to-back semifinals at 's-Hertogenbosch and Wimbledon. He ranked among the top 10 circuit leaders in match wins on the surface last year with an 8-3 record.
Baghdatis next confronts Florian Mayer after the German extended second seed Nikolay Davydenko's woes on grass. Mayer, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, needed just 70 minutes to get by the Russian 6-4, 6-4 and book his place in the Halle quarterfinals for the second straight year. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Baghdatis: "First set he served very well, a high percentage. I was tough to break him and to return. I had some chances in the tiebreak and I did not take them. Second set, he broke me so I said that I just have to try and find a way to make him play bad. I tried to go like a goalkeeper, just choose one corner and today it came out. I broke him four times. So, I’m pretty happy I won today and found a solution."
On whether he is a favorite to win the tournament: "All the matches are tough. There are a lot of good players. Especially on grass you have to keep your concentration. Just two or three stupid mistakes and then you get broken and the match is over. So, I think it is important to stay concentrated during the match and with every game you play. I think I’m one of the favorites for sure but every match is tough."www.atptennis.com/1/en/news/news7.asp

The grass was slippery but Marcos won 6-3 6-3. Solid match. Focused all the way. He'll play Kohlschreiber tomorrow for a place in the final on Sunday, with maybe a very nice present for his 22nd birthday!!
