from Marcos' official site:baghdatis.com/articles/view/marcos-edges-ebden-for-qf-berthMarcos Edges Ebden For QF BerthWednesday, 11 January, 2012Marcos edged a closely-fought encounter with Australian wild card Matthew Ebden, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(3), on Wednesday in Sydney to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tournament. In extremely hot and blustery conditions in Sydney, Ebden made the better start, breaking for a 3-1 lead. Marcos had three chances to break back in the ninth game, but was unable to convert as the No. 97-ranked Ebden clinched the opener. Marcos hit back immediately in the second set as he opened up a 2-0 lead, but Ebden pegged him back in the seventh game. Marcos held his nerve, though, and broke the Australian’s serve once more in the 12th game to level the match. Neither player was able to make a breakthrough on serve in the decider, and it was Marcos who excelled in the tie-break, clinching victory as Ebden fired a forehand wide after two hours and 12 minutes. "Today was not the greatest match I've played, but I'm very happy because I might get these conditions up in Melbourne. It's nice to feel bad in these conditions and fight through," said Marcos. "Matthew I think came up in the first set playing very aggressive and very good. I'm happy the way I finished. I was serving much better, and I fought through. I found a way to win. I played great in the tie-break, so I'm very happy."In the quarter-finals Marcos will face top seed Juan Martin del Potro, who earlier defeated Lukasz Kubot after receiving a bye through the first round. Marcos and del Potro have split their previous two meetings, with the Argentine taking their first clash in Miami five years ago, before Marcos got the better of him at last year’s Australian Open. The match will be played on Thursday in Sydney, beginning at 7:30pm local time (GMT +11hours). Check out the full order of play here. Stay tuned to www.baghdatis.com for all the latest news from Sydney. Go, Marcos!

unfortunately i watched only the 10 th game of the opening set where Marcos was down a break and Juan Martin appeared ready to serve out the set, but Marcos was set to serve up his best. Marcos became more aggressive, taking the balls early, on the rise and managed to break Delpo's serve... and i had to leave home again... just came back home, and it's nice to see Marcos finding out how to achieve his dreams and destiny. Marcos beat Juan Martin 7-6(7) 6-4. . Marcos, force Benny into the desired position and finish him off tomorrow. please.

www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2012/01/2/Sydney-Thursday-Istomin-Upsets-Gasquet.aspxBaghdatis Beats del PotroSydney, Australia by ATP Staff | 12.01.2012Marcos Baghdatis closed on a second appearance in the Apia International Sydney final on Thursday night as he ousted top seed Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(7), 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The Cypriot won his fourth ATP World Tour title in Sydney in 2010 (d. Gasquet). "I played some great tennis today," said Baghdatis. "[I'm] happy the way I'm playing. It's a great victory for me. I know I can beat anybody. I've beaten the best before. I think if I continue working on this aggressive play and the way I played today, I'm going to win more matches and [beat] bigger opponents."Former World No. 4 del Potro served for the first set at 5-4, and held two set points at 6-4 in the ensuing tie-break but failed to convert. After fighting back to clinch the opener, Baghdatis broke del Potro in the seventh game of the second set to claim victory in one hour and 40 minutes. "I think Marcos played really well in important moments, and I had a chance in the first set and I didn't take it," said del Potro. "When you lose every chance and the opponent is like Marcos, you will lose. At the end of the match, he was completely confident with his game and made a lot of winners with the backhand and forehand. [It] was really tough."
The 26-year-old Baghdatis opened his 2012 campaign with a quarter-final effort at the Brisbane International (l. to Murray) last week. He is bidding to reach his first ATP World Tour final since finishing runner-up at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur last September (l. to Tipsarevic). In the semi-finals Baghdatis will face Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who converted five of 13 break point opportunities to record a late-night 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia.

www.apiainternational.com.au/2012/01/baghdatis-bags-del-potro-in-quarterfinalsBaghdatis beats Del Potro, into semisThursday 12 January 2012Update 11:33 pm Former finalist champion Marcos Baghdatis took care of top seed Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals of the Apia International Sydney Thursday night. The crowd-pleasing Cypriot won 7-6 (7), 6-4. With a vocal crowd cheering him on Baghdatis fought back from a slow start to complete the victory in one hour and 40 minutes. He won here in 2010. Del Potro, the last of the seeded players in the men’s draw, was clearly agitated by vocal sections of the crowd who were cheering on the popular Cypriot and had a lengthy discussion with court umpire Fergus Murphy at the end of the first set. It did little good for the giant Argentine, who struggled to deal with Baghdatis’ tremendous defensive qualities in the second set. Baghdatis made the decisive break in the seventh game of the second set, before serving out the match much to the fans’ approval. The 26-year-old said he has enjoyed so much success at the tournament in part because he feels at home – and his nan’s cooking. “I have lots of relatives here, my grandma lives here and I just love coming back every year,” he said after the match. “My Lebanese food from my grandma makes me feel good.” Del Potro looked in control in the first set, having broken Baghdatis in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. But Baghdatis broke back soon after to make it 5-5, before both players held serve to force a tie-break. Again del Potro took the early advantage and had two set points – but through brilliant defensive tennis, and with a bit of good fortune from the net, the scrappy Cypriot saved both and not long after only needed one set point of his own to take out the set. Baghdatis was pleased to have improved from a hard-fought three-set victory over Australian Matthew Ebden in the previous round. “I played great today, I had a not so good match yesterday in tough conditions and [my coach] just said to go for it and I went for it,” he said. “I was playing really aggressive. It was great.”

from Marcos' official site:baghdatis.com/articles/view/marcos-loses-to-benneteauMarcos Loses To BenneteauFriday, 13 January, 2012Marcos’ good run in Sydney came to an end at the hands of Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who played a high level of tennis to advance with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on Friday in the semi-finals. Marcos fought back from a 1-4 double break deficit in the first set, but the scoreline parity was shortlived as Benneteau broke again in the ninth game and served out the first set. The Frenchman broke decisively in the fifth game of the second set, and closed out the match in an epic service game, which saw Marcos denied on three break point chances before Benneteau converted his sixth match point opportunity after one hour and 56 minutes. "Benneteau played very well today," reflected Marcos. “He was really feeling the ball very well. I was a bit tight again. I wasn't so aggressive. I tried, but my shots were not heavy enough. He played very, very smart, very aggressive, was serving very well. I had my chances. I didn't take them; he did."I lost 6-4, 6-4, but it was very close match. Could have gone either way. But it's a positive week for me here. I had so much fun here and played four good matches. I'm pretty happy."Marcos will now head to Melbourne for the Australian Open, which begins on Monday. The draw was made on Friday and Marcos will face Germany’s Benjamin Becker in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament that he reached the final of in 2006. Check out the full Australian Open draw here. Stay tuned to www.baghdatis.com for all the latest news.
