Marcos and Eric lost to the pair Nieminen/Tursunov. Nieminen/Tursunov Win Munich Doubles Crown
Munich, Germany by ATP Staff 05.05.2013 Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov won their first ATP World Tour doubles crown together.
Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov won their first ATP World Tour doubles title on Sunday, defeating first-time pairing Marcos Baghdatis and Eric Butorac 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the BMW Open in Munich.
Nieminen and Tursunov, who knocked out top seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in the quarter-finals, saved five of the six break points they faced and broke their Cypriot/American opponents four times for victory in 57 minutes.
"I think today both of us were so nervous and so tight. We're just glad it's finally over,” said Tursunov. “It wasn't the prettiest match for both teams, but we had some good points and definitely happy to win. It helped us [this week] that the courts were a little bit slow with the weather and conditions, so we were able to hit a lot of ground strokes. It's tough for the doubles guys; they're so used to high-paced shots. We were able to take our time and pick our spots."
The 31-year-old Nieminen collected his third ATP World Tour doubles crown and his first since triumphing three years ago in Gstaad with Johan Brunstrom. The 30-year-old Tursunov captured his sixth trophy and improved to a 6-5 finals record.
“It feels extremely good. I don't have that many [doubles] titles,” said Nieminen. “It's always special to play for the title in the final. I was very happy that we continued this extremely good run. We didn't drop a set during the week. It was very nice to play with Dmitry. I was surprised how well we played together and how solid we stayed throughout the week.”www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2013/04/18/Munich-Sunday-Doubles-Final.aspxWell this week has brought some competition on clay for Marcos. Even though he didn't go far in the singles competition, he reached the doubles final, associated to Eric Butorac, pairing with him for the very 1st time. So I guess that we can say it's been a success for Marcos Let's hope for more next week in Madrid!
