From the site of the event: Wawrinka wins battle of the beards
By Clair Maciel Sunday, September 1, 2013
WHAT HAPPENED: Up two-sets-to-love in his third-round match against Marcos Baghdatis, No. 9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka looked to be headed to an easy straight-set win Sunday afternoon. But at the start of the third set, a determined Marcos Baghdatis fought his way back into the match and summoned his best tennis to stay alive.
Deep into the fourth-set tiebreak, however, Baghdatis blinked, allowing Wawrinka to hold off the Cypriot in a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 win to advance to the fourth round.
Wawrinka, known for his graceful, penetrating one-handed backhand that almost always hits its mark, effectively used his signature shot to dismantle the Cypriot’s game in the rallies. While Baghdatis smacked forehand return winners off Wawrinka’s serve, the Swiss kept Baghdatis on a string at the baseline, opening the court so that he could play to his strength and rip a backhand down-the-line winner.
Wawrinka cruised through the first two sets, giving up only five games en route, but that’s when Baghdatis suddenly came alive. With no breaks of serve in the third set, it was do-or-die for the Cypriot in the tiebreak. He produced clutch play to jump to a 5-0 lead, giving up only one point thereafter to take the set and stay alive in the match.
The momentum swing was then in full favor of Baghdatis, who broke Wawrinka in the opening game of the fourth. Wawrinka’s backhand began missing more often, and the crowd, wanting to see more tennis, got behind Baghdatis.
His resurgence took him all the way to a fourth set tiebreak, which included a 20-shot rally on Wawrinka’s first match point that Baghdatis won. Four points later, the highly emotional battle had come to a conclusion, as a netted return from Baghdatis handed Wawrinka the victory.
WHAT IT MEANS: Wawrinka will play for a spot in the quarterfinals when he meets No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych. The win also marks the first time the Swiss has reached the fourth round or better at three Grand Slams in a year.
Baghdatis’ loss means he’ll have to wait until the next major to have a chance at reaching the fourth round of a Slam, which he hasn’t done since the 2009 Australian Open.www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2013-09-01/201309011378060989817.html?chip=3
