Well, initially Marcos was the third alternate just after Gicquel and Melzer. Almagro has pulled out, so Gicquel got a direct entry to the main draw. Melzer has already pulled out. Now, Marcos is the first alternate waiting to receive a direct entry into the main draw.
Let's wait and see. Davydenko is suffering a wrist injury, fans spread rumours about Rodd-ick's withdrawal...
No chance for handing a WC to Marcos since there is a plethora of French players waiting for the magic ticket. Benneteau, Serra, Devilder, Clement, Mahut...

Now, Marcos is the first alternate waiting to receive a direct entry into the main draw. Mardy Fish just pulled out of the tournament. Marcos gets a direct entry to the main draw and doesn't need to play qualies now.

Marcos just retired from his match against Querrey. Querrey had won the 1st set 7-5 but Marcos fought hard and took the 2nd one 7-6 (7-5). Marcos called for the trainer at 3-2 in the 3rd set. He told the umpire he may stop because he couldn't serve anymore. The trainer confirmed what Marcos was fearing. He wouldn't change anything to the pain with a massage. So Marcos gave up. He said that he was a bit disappointed to have to throw the towel after 2 sets but he was happy to have been able to play those 2 sets, and he was thankfull for the support of the crowd. He obviously looked in a better shape than last week in Basel and played a better match but I think it was a wise decision to stop. The season is over. He needs now to rest his body in order to begin his preparation for 2009 in the best conditions possible.
Have a good rest Marcos and see you in 2009!!
