Marcos made the final there last year, against Berdych. Circumstances this year are different. Just hope he can defend those points as much as he can. Official site: www.gerryweber-open.de/en/

Marcos' quarter of the draw: [1] Roger FEDERER (SUI) vs. Michael BERRER (GER) QUALIFIER vs. QUALIFIER Rainer SCHUETTLER (GER) vs. Fabrice SANTORO (FRA) QUALIFIER vs. Marcos BAGHDATIS (CYP) [5]It's pointless to write further. Under the present circumstances, I would be very happy if Marcos won the first rounds and gave it a fight in the QF.

Marcos defeated Jan Hernych 6-4 7-5. I'm so relieved as I was a bit afraid of the outcome of this match. Marcos' last win on ATP level was 3 months ago. I'm talking about his win over Odesnik at Indian Wells, only to be thrashed by Stan in the second round... Marcos' second round opponent in Halle will be Fabrice Santoro. A player with very, very tricky game. Hopefully Marcos will play an intelligent and beautiful match against Fab. Allez, Marcos!!! Pame, Marko!!!

I'm happy Marcos won his 1st round match yesterday, but his next match against Santoro will be hard for me, as I'm also a Santoro fan, and it's probably Fab's last time at the Gerry Weber event. Just hope it's a great match to see, for those who will be lucky to watch it

Marcos, in the familiar role as the dizzy chicken, will play against Roger tomorrow. Most probably, we won't be surprised... Funny thing is that if Roger brings his crappiest game on court, Marcos will bring his crappiest game too. Cincinnati anyone?

Well, there had to be a winner of course. This is the kind of situation that I am both happy and sad about the result. But anyway, here's from the ATP site: World No. 1 Federer, who will contest his ninth quarterfinal of the season, now stands at 34-8. He captured his 54th ATP title at Estoril (d. Davydenko) and also finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, Masters Series Monte-Carlo and Masters Series Hamburg.
He next faces fifth seed and last year's runner-up Marcos Baghdatis after the Cypriot dismissed French veteran Fabrice Santoro, 6-4, 6-3. Federer has a 5-0 lifetime record against Baghdatis, one of those wins coming in the 2006 Australian Open final. (Head-to-head)
"I think Marcos is in some ways one of the dark horses for Wimbledon," said Federer. "He is not to be underestimated on grass. He’s been in the finals here, semis in Wimbledon."
The 22-year-old Baghdatis has seen limited playing time in recent months, having been sidelined with an ankle injury since early April. He returned to ATP action in a first round loss at Roland Garros, and will be appearing in his first quarterfinal since reaching the Marseille semifinals in February (l. to Ancic).
Baghdatis said of his opponent: "I’ve never played him on grass. I don’t know how many times he won Wimbledon. And four times here. So, it’s a bit tough. But I’ll just try to play my game and see how he is playing on grass. Maybe I can learn from tomorrow’s match."www.atptennis.com/1/en/2008news/halle_thursday.aspAnd here's from the Gerry Weber site: Baghdatis was off to a bad start as Santoro clinched the first eight points, forcing the fifth-seed to overcome an early deficit. Both men were struggling with their serves, though, and there were no less than five breaks in the first set. Baghdatis earned three of them to go up 6-4. He gained impetus in the second set, getting the better of his French opponent despite his awkward style. Up 2-1 and receiving, he won another break. He never looked back, taking the second set 6-3. “I did not feel comfortable early in the match,” he said. “It was quite cold, I had to wait and then there was Fabrice with his strange style.” Next up is a meeting with grass court king Roger Federer, whom he has not beaten in the last five matches. “But I have never played against him on grass,” he added. “Maybe I can get it done on this surface.”www.gerryweber-open.de/en/current-news/news-gerry-weber-open.html?id=2767&jahr=2008&monat=06

Marcos's interview after he defeated Santoro: Q: That was a pretty tough start for you. You did not seem to be very comfortable on court? BAGHDATIS: Not really. No excuses, but when you come in last match, you wait the whole day, you’re inside, it’s bad weather outside, it’s a bit cold, and then playing against Fabrice too. It’s very tough. He did not miss a ball the first game, I did not win a point the first two games. I’m pretty happy I won because I know Fabrice is a great player, big experience, he studies the game well. I think he was ready to hurt me and to play good against me because he studied me. So, I’m pretty happy I won and found a solution. So, now I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game.
Q: Can you explain what the solution was? BAGHDATIS: To be aggressive. I know it’s tough to play against him because of his slice, he has a very good backhand, returns well. I just wanted to be aggressive on the returns, serve well and go a lot on the net. That’s what I did. I started with Peter Lundgren two weeks ago. He started to change a bit my game. He told me to go forward to the net. So, I’m trying to do that. It’s tough at the beginning because I’m a bit lost on the court. But, it will take time and I hope playing this way can make me play better tennis in the future.
Q: Tomorrow you have no time against Roger? BAGHDATIS: For sure. I never played him on grass. I don’t know how many times he won Wimbledon. And four times here. So, it’s a bit tough. But I’ll just try to play my game and see how he is playing on grass. Maybe I can learn from tomorrow’s match.
Q: Can Peter help you given how much he worked with Roger? BAGHDATIS: Of course. He can help me a lot. He helps me a lot until this moment. He made me play simple tennis, go more forward, serve better. It’s just a simple coach that tells you the right thing at the right time. That helps me a lot. He worked with Roger seven years. So, I hope he can give me some tips against him.www.gerryweber-open.de/en/current-news/interviews/marcos-baghdatis-2008-06-12.html?jahr=2008&monat=06

Marcos lost to Federer 4-6 4-6. Not much that Marcos could do today against the N°1.
