Sad news: The organizers of Status Athens Open 2009 were informed by the ATP about the injury of Marcos Baghdatis and his subsequent withdrawal from the tournament just a few hours before the beginning of the professional men’s tournament $125.000 in Athens Lawn Tennis Club.
After the official briefing from the ATP, Marcos contacted personally the organisers expressing his sadness about his inability to compete in the tournament. He stated: “I can’t find the words to express how saddened I am for the injury that prevents me from coming to compete in Athens, in front of the Greek tennis lovers who have supported me wherever in the world I have been. Unfortunately in my last match against Frenchman Mathieu in Miami I injured my ankle. My willingness to perform in Athens was such that I made every effort with my doctors up until the last moment to overcome this injury so that I could come to Greece and compete in Status Athens Open. I am deeply frustrated that this could not be achieved and now I have to be out of action for at least two weeks. I wish that I have the opportunity in the future to compete in Greece in front of the warm Greek fans. I thank you all for your love and your support.”
This unfortunate development for Marcos and the Greek fans that have missed the opportunity to watch him play came just one day before the start of the qualifying matches of Status Athens Open 2009 which begin at 10.00 in the morning in Athens Lawn Tennis Club in Zappion. Five Greeks are among the players of the qualifying: Charis Kapogiannis, Dimitris Loucareas, Ilias Giannakakis, Nikos Rovas and Nikos Serkedakis, using Wild Cards issued by the organisers. www.statusathensopen.gr/default.asp?pid=2&ncatID=2&newsID=61&la=2
