Tough opening match for Marcos. Sam Querrey won their only previous match at AMS Paris last year.
The Californian big server is also known for his big fan base (The Samurai). Marcos has to overcome the nerves on his comeback... he knows his 180 points from Marseille semis will drop this week...
By the way, Sam Querrey is the only American tennis player I like because he doesn't display any kind of snobbery towards the European tournaments on clay.

Yes, that 1st round match against Querrey won't be an easy one but Marcos has been slowly building up his confidence lately and I think that this should be a good test to know exactly where he is. Good luck to him!!

Marcos lost to Sam Querrey and his ranking will drop at maybe 110.
I don't mind that though. San Jose, just like Memphis and Delray Beach, is a mickey mouse tournament.
It's Indian Wells and Miami that count. Marcos will be "punished" harshly if he fails to deliver there. Hope he plays qualies in both AMS tournaments. It would be dangerous for him if the organisers handed him wildcards... He just needs some match practice to know where exactly he stands and get accustomed to tough climate conditions at IW especially. Fortunately, this time Marcos won't get exhausted by long distance air travels which involve crossing many time zones...

www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/1/en/news/newsarticle_2152.aspFebruary 11, 2009 San Jose, CA, U.S.A. Querrey Overcomes Baghdatis ChallengeSixth-seeded American Sam Querrey prevailed in a challenging first round match, defeating Cypriot wild card Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) on Wednesday at the SAP Open in San Jose. Baghdatis jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the third-set tie-break but failed to hold onto the lead as Querrey levelled the score at 4-all and proceeded to close out the match by winning the final three points. The 23-year-old California native will look to reach the quarter-finals at this ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament for the first time in four event appearances when he next faces German Denis Gremelmayr, whom he lost to last year in his first round match at San Jose. Querrey reached a career-high ranking of No. 33 in January following a runner-up showing in Auckland (l. to del Potro). He said of his improvement: "I’ve been working a lot off court, putting in a lot of time on the track and in the gym, and I think it’s paid off. I felt fit out there. I could’ve gone another two sets pretty easily. I feel quick. I’ve been working a lot on my backhand. It felt pretty solid out there today, and I’m still trying to get to the net when I can."

www.tennistalk.com/en/match_report/SAP_Open/2009/Sam_Querrey_-_Marcos_BaghdatisQuerrey outlasts Baghdatis in third-set tiebreaker2/12/09 2:06 AM | Ricky DimonSam Querrey prevails in a marquee matchup with Marcos Baghdatis in the first round of the SAP Open, but not before a third-set tiebreaker becomes necessary to decide things. Sam Querrey survived an extremely tough first-round thriller against Marcos Baghdatis on Wednesday night at San Jose's SAP Open. The 6'6'' American needed one hour and 58 minutes to oust Baghdatis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) and book his place in the second round, where he will take on German Denis Gremelmayr. It looked like it would be a little bit easier for Querrey after one set. A single break of serve was enough for the No. 6 seed to cruise through the opening frame of play because he won all 13 of his first-serve points and only lost a total of four points in five service games. Baghdatis' 45-percent serving did not help his chances in the first set. Both men improved their return games in the second, and two breaks of serve were exchanged until 5-5. Baghdatis started to get a much better read on Querrey's first serve and it paid off in the form of his second break of the match at 6-5. That set up the tense final set, which was dominated by the servers for twelve games on the way to the tiebreaker. Baghdatis did not lose a single point in the third when he put in his first serve. Querrey, in turn, won 18 of 20 first-serve points en route to the 'breaker and neither man faced a break point. The decider, however, was far less straightforward. Baghdatis jumped out to a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead, taking the second and third points on Querrey's serve, but his opponent returned the favor by winning four straight points of his own. After Baghdatis took care of a service point for 5-4, he got two looks at second serves but missed both chances. At 6-5, Querrey capitalized on his first match point to secure a spot in the second round. Querrey, who fired 16 aces in the victory, and Gremelmayr have square off once before. The encounter came exactly one year ago in the first round of this same San Jose event, and Querrey prevailed 6-3 in the third.
