www.sonyericssonopen.com/1/en/news/newsarticle_2792.aspBaghdatis Makes Strong StartPhoto: © Sony Ericsson Open Marcos Baghdatis Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis made an emphatic start to his Sony Ericsson Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Latvian Ernests Gulbis on Wednesday at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Miami. The 23-year-old Baghdatis fired seven aces and converted four of six break opportunities to secure his fourth victory (4-0 record) over Gulbis in 80 minutes. He goes on to face French No. 31 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round. “I know the guy (Gulbis) doesn't give rhythm,” said Baghdatis. “He's smacking all the balls around. So I just played point per point. just tried to put the ball back as many times as I could. It's not easy playing guys like that. He came with lots of unforced errors. That's the way I had to play today, so I'm pretty happy I did it good and I won and I'm in the next round.”
Currently ranked No. 105 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, Baghdatis was restricted to just 12 tournaments in an injury ridden 2008 season. The former No. 8 (August 21, 2006) has an 11-6 match record in 2009, highlighted by quarterfinal showings at Johannesburg (l. to Ferrer) and Delray Beach (l. to Chardy) and a run to the Australian Open fourth round (l. to Djokovic).

How were you feeling out there under the sun?MARCOS BAGHDATIS: Pretty good. I’m feeling good, you know. I had some time back home, so I’m pretty, you know – I’m good in the head, good physically. I’m rested, so… I’m pretty happy I’m playing that well on the court. That’s good. Q. How did you prepare to play Gulbis?MARCOS BAGHDATIS: I played him a month ago in Delray beach not so far from here. Basically I know the guy doesn’t give rhythm. He’s smacking all the balls around, you know. So I just kept – you know, played point per point. Just tried to put the ball back as many times as I can. It’s not easy playing guys like that. That’s what I did. He came with lots of unforced errors. That’s the way I had to play today, so I’m pretty happy I did it good and I won and I’m in the next round. Q. Do you expect to get very far? I mean, what are your expectations for the tournament?MARCOS BAGHDATIS: Yeah, you know, my expectations is the next round, you know. I’m just going to watch who I play next round. Today I’m going to have the day to relax, and tomorrow start talking with my coach about my next match. Basically, that’s it. Take match per match and just try to go throughout the two weeks here. Q. Do you find it difficult having achieved so much coming to this press conference here and there’s three or four people? Does it seem weird, or do you look at it as it’s a whole new journey and an exciting journey?MARCOS BAGHDATIS: No, it’s my – it’s my ranking. It fell down. I was injured last year, so, you know, I don’t really mind people don’t caring about me, because I know when I go up there they will start caring about me. I don’t mind, you know. I don’t mind. ============================================= Marcos  :smooch:

Paulo defeated Marcos 6-3 2-6 6-2. I thought that Marcos was going in the right direction and definitely didn’t see this coming. Sadly, I can’t single out his service as cause of his defeat. People who say this are either foolish or ignorant, unless they’re just plain liars. Neither would I be surprised if certain Marcos’ idiot fans got high and started talking nonsense about Marcos’ training and coaching… Anyway, I was following the scoreboard and was shocked by Marcos’ lack of mental fortitude to cope with demanding conditions… Stay tuned for further details.
