From eurosport.com, about the match: Marcos Baghdatis made a successful start to his preparation for the Australian Open with a straight sets 7-6 6-1 victory over Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis in Sydney.
Baghdatis burst on to the scene in the 2006 Australian Open with a dream run to the final where it took world number one Roger Federer to stop him.
The world number 11 - who has a large fanbase in Australia including a number of relatives - received a medical timeout after the first set for a sore hip but the soreness is not expected to prove a serious problem.
"After we massaged it, it was getting better," he said.
"I still have a bit of pain but by treating it, it will go away."www.eurosport.com/tennis/atp-sydney/2007/sport_sto1048962.shtmlI hope this pb with the hip isn't serious, as he says it's not. Just hope he isn't trying to simply relieve his fans......with the AO coming up. Let's see how things go. I wouldn't mind if he decided, if the hip keeps on bothering him, to withdraw from the Sydney event.

Marcos reaches the QFs in Sydney, thanks to his win over Hernych in 3 sets.
From the ATP site:
World No. 11 Marcos Baghdatis fought his way into the Medibank International quarterfinals Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3 win over Czech Jan Hernych. The Cypriot, who last year reached the Australian Open final, next faces Carlos Moya.
Baghdatis, who last week reached the Doha quarterfinals (l. Soderling) is playing for the first time in Sydney.

From eurosport.com: Marcos Baghdatis booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Sydney International with a 6-4 6-7 6-3 victory over Czech Jan Hernych.
Defending champion James Blake also advanced to the last eight with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Australian wildcard Nathan Healey while Russian lucky loser Evgeny Korolev kept his unlikely run going by beating Robby Ginepri 0-6 6-4 6-4.
Baghdatis, whose fairytale run to last year's Australian Open brought the tournament to life, was given a tough workout from Hernych.
The charismatic Cypriot surprised his followers when he arrived on Sydney's Olympic Park centre court without his trademark beard and briefly gave them cause to worry before raising his game in the final set.
"It wasn't easy. It was hot out there and it's the first time I've played in the heat for a while so it was good to have a match like that before the Open."
Baghdatis is aware of expectations on him to succeed again this year but believes he is in better physical and mental shape than 12 months ago.
"I'm more experienced, I'm tougher mentally, my footwork is better,"
"I've had five weeks preparation...I feel a lot faster, I feel better both physically and mentally." Baghdatis was sporting a new look in Sydney after shaving off his trademark beard but accepts nothing will help him avoid the hype when he arrives in the Victorian state capital later this week.
"There is pressure but I'm just trying to live with it," he said.
"That's just the way it is so I have to try and accept it and try and enjoy it.
"Every time I go on to the court I just try to fight, to give my best, that's the only thing you can do." Baghdatis plays Carlos Moya in Thursday's quarter-finals after the former world number one saved a match point in his 4-6 7-6 6-3 win over fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.eurosport.com/tennis/atp-sydney/2007/sport_sto1050831.shtml

The match has been long and tight in the end. Final score 6-1 3-6 7-6 for Moya. I've followed the livescores from the middle of the 2nd set on. Marcos had an early break in the 3rd set and managed to keep it safe till he served for the match at 5-4. As expected, Moya put pressure on him and broke back. Marcos held his serve twice then, reaching the tiebreak. But Moya's been too strong. He took the tiebreak -and the match- with 7 pts to 3. Time to think of the AO now, with the points to defend. Hope Marcos can get some rest before it starts. Good performance so far for 2007. 2 events and twice reached the QFs. Well done.

Bad news...... This is something that following the livescores doesn't tell you. Hope everything's ok. Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya got the better of Marcos Baghdatis in the pair’s first career meeting. Spaniard Moya won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(3) in two hours and 27 minutes, with fourth seed Baghdatis suffering an injury scare.
The Cypriot collapsed in pain after twisting his ankle in the third set and immediately called for a medical timeout to have the injury treated.www.atptennis.com/1/en/news/news1.asp
