Marcos reached the semifinal by defeating Simon!! Woohoo From the Brisbane website: UPDATE 6pm: It was a case of third time lucky for Marcos Baghdatis, after the Cypriot defeated third seed Gilles Simon in the Brisbane International quarterfinals on Pat Rafter Arena on Friday.
The unseeded Baghdatis had reached the quarterfinal stage at the past two Brisbane tournaments and finally broke through to the last four with a 6-4, 6-4 upset of the Frenchman.
Former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis has cruised into the Brisbane International semi-finals by upsetting third-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon in straight sets on Friday.
World No.36 Baghdatis – ranked 20 places lower than Simon – maintained his Midas touch in Australia and extended his record Down Under to 38-14, which includes his sole Grand Slam final appearance in 2006 and his last ATP World Tour title in Sydney three years ago.
The Cypriot has not dropped a set on his way to booking his maiden Brisbane International semi-final.
“The people here, you have so much positive energy from the fans,” Baghdatis said.
“I think it’s a great privilege for an athlete to come here and be shown so much love.”
There has been no shortage of off-court love either – Baghdatis celebrated the birth of his first child, daughter Zahara, in October.
“My wife and my baby are not here but they are great,” he said.
“It was the best year of my life last year. It (becoming a father) helps a person stabilise and see life a bit different.”
Although not at his scintilating best, the world No.36 was too strong for his French opponent, with Simon seemingly struggling to find his usual rhythm.
The pair exchanged breaks in the opening games of the match before Baghdatis secured the crucial late break to take the first set 6-3.
Always a crowd favourite here after his memorable run to the Australian Open final in 2006, the 27-year-old continued to be the aggressor, claiming the second set 6-4 in similar fashion to the first.
Baghdatis will meet either seventh seed Jurgen Melzer or Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who knocked out second seed MIlos Raonic in the second round.

Dimitrov defeated Marcos 6-3 5-7 7-6. The match has been tight. From the site of the event: Unseeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov is through to his first ATP final after taking down Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in three gripping sets 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) in 2h 35mins. Having already taken out the tournament’s second seed Milos Raonic and seventh seed Jurgen Melzer, the 21-year-old had form on his side but faced a rejuvenated Marcos Baghdatis.
It took a thrilling final-set tiebreak to separate the two combatants in what was a fitting end to a closely fought encounter.
“I’m very happy I have to say … especially to start the first tournament of the year. It’s definitely a great feeling,” a grinning Dimitrov said after the match.
After admitting he didn’t feel 100 per cent in his quarterfinal, Dimitrov started strongly to take the first set 6-3 before claiming an early break in the second to lead 3-2.
However, Baghdatis rallied to break back – he then upped the intensity at the back end of the set to take it 7-5.
Despite the former Australian Open finalist having momentum on his side, Dimitrov knew he was still well in the game.
“The third set was just a matter of who was going to take the first opportunity, that first chance,” Dimitrov said.
With neither player able to break the other’s serve, the match went into a deciding tiebreak where Dimitrov produced the big shots when it mattered most.
Down 4-5, the Bulgarian produce an incredible backhand pass that seemingly broke the resolve of his opponent.
“It was pretty big … I knew he was going there and I was on the run. I kind of improvised a little bit. I couldn’t lob so I thought I might as well go down the line,” Dimitrov said.
From there, Dimitrov claimed the final two points of the match with Baghdatis committing consecutive unforced errors.
Dimitrov, whose playing style and mannerisms are often likened to Roger Federer, will meet top seed and defending Brisbane International champion Andy Murray in the final at Pat Rafter Arena on Sunday afternoon.www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/2013/01/dimitrov-downs-baghdatis-in-thriller#more-8635Well it's been a great week in Brisbane for Marcos. A new season beginning with strong self confidence
