From the site of the event, about the match: No Trouble or Stubble for Baghdatis Tuesday, 26 June, 2007
Newly beard-free Marcos Baghdatis booked his place in the second round - but it was so very nearly a close shave against dashing young blade Ernests Gulbis.
The No.10 seed, who reached the semi-finals last year, took a while to find his rhythm on Court 2 against his 18-year-old Latvian opponent, who was making his debut Wimbledon appearance, but finally sealed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Perhaps, it was because he was kept waiting at the start of the match. The Cypriot is a man that likes to get on with his tennis. He doesn’t dilly dally and, at times, almost appears to rush between points, which is all very well if your opponent has turned up.
But the 22-year-old was kept waiting for at least five minutes and could only sit and wait, wrapped in a towel to stay warm, before Gulbis eventually strolled on court. And when the match finally got under way, it was Baghdatis who appeared to make a slow start.
On paper, the match should have been a relatively straightforward affair. For a start Gulbis is ranked 66 places below the Cypriot at 82 in the world. This is only his second Grand Slam appearance and, before this year, he has never played on grass at any point in his career.
Baghdatis, on the other hand, lost to Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon semi-finals last year and reached the final of the Halle grass court tournament just a few weeks ago.
But you would never have guessed from the first set. The Latvian was far from nervous as he took control of the match, moving Baghdatis around like a puppet on a string and in just 27 minutes he had swiped the first set.
But all that changed in the second when the Cypriot began reading the ball more accurately and he was able to level the match at one set all.
From then, Gulbis’s head seemed to drop as Baghdatis gained in confidence, diving for balls and displaying the showmanship that stands him out from the other players on the tour.
Ultimately, it was unforced errors that proved to be Gulbis’s undoing. He notched up 37 compared to Baghdatis’s 14 and in just under two hours his Wimbledon dream was over.

From the Wimbledon site: Baghdatis Recovers to Down Devilder
Thursday, 28 June, 2007
Tenth seed Marcos Baghdatis made heavier work than expected of an opponent ranked 86 places below him, Frenchman Nicolas Devilder, before finally triumphing in ten minutes short of three hours, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Baghdatis pocketed the first set in just 19 minutes, without giving the 27-year-old so much as a look-in. The shock of losing the opening set to love clearly spurred the Frenchman onto greater things. He came out of the blocks with much more focus, surprising Baghdatis who lost his focus temporarily, playing some wayward ground-strokes.
The 22-year-old Cypriot regrouped mid-set, using his speed to run around returns and whip up his favoured top-spin forehand, but Devilder, appearing in Grand Slams for the first time this year, was warming to his task. The pair shared the next two sets on tie-breaks before Baghdatis finally took control, racing through the fourth and final set in 37 minutes.www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/articles/2007-06-28/200706281183055618281.html
