Wawrinka and Baghdatis to Play Final of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
February 26, 2016 -- Dubai UAE: Second seed Stan Wawrinka and unseeded Marcos Baghdatis will contest the 24th Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final after achieving contrasting victories on Friday. Wawrinka advanced 6-4 3-0 when Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire in the second set due to injury, and Baghdatis rebounded from dropping the opening set to defeat sixth seed Feliciano Lopez 3-6 7-6 (1) 6-1.
Wawrinka built a 4-1 lead as Kyrgios often struggled with his serve, and although he managed to win the next two games the Australian then received treatment for what appeared to be a back injury. When play resumed he levelled at 4-4, but that would be the last game he won. Down 3-0 in the second set he decided he could no longer continue.
Although he won, Wawrinka is still not entirely satisfied with his form.
“Not yet, but I'm in finals so there is one more match to play my best tennis. That's the most important,” Wawrinka said. “For sure if you look from the beginning of the week I was not playing great at all. I was trying to find a way, frustrated during matches but still fighting and trying to find solutions to win more matches during the week to play better.
“I start to feel way better already yesterday. I feel that on the court I start to feel better. I know what to expect. I'm moving better. I'm a little bit more relaxed and my strokes are going better.”
Kyrgios admitted that he had been struggling throughout the week, after winning his maiden title last weekend in Marseilles. “I had a bit of a hip injury at the start of Marseilles. That was still sort of bothering me a little bit. I was sort of struggling with a couple of niggles,” Kyrgios said. “It was a bit of a struggle, to be honest. I have been feeling so bad every day, like I've got some viral infection as well.”
Last year Baghdatis needed a wild card to play the tournament as after a run of injuries he was not ranked high enough to enter the main draw. It has been a remarkable turnaround.
“It's been a long road for me the last three, four years,” he said. “It's all about fighting, getting back to where I want to be. Last year we set some goals to be top 50 with my team. I achieved that. Now I'm moving forward. I think I have still a lot to improve on, but the most important thing is healthy-wise I'm very, very good. I don't have any injuries and health problems that I had.”
Lopez was attempting to reach his third Dubai final, and came close to doing so as he led Baghdatis by a set and a break at 4-3 in the second. But the Cypriot credited the crowd in playing a part in being able to fight his way out of trouble.
“He was the better player today I think the first two sets,” said Baghdatis. “End of the second he was a break up at 4-3, and serving with new balls but he couldn't hold his nerves. The crowd helped me amazingly there, and, yeah, I found a way to fight in the second and win it. I think I played an unbelievable tiebreak, very solid, returned very well, served very well. Then started to get momentum in the third.”
Stan Wawrinka and Marcos Baghdatis will both be playing in their first Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final, with Wawrinka winning all five of their previous meetings.
“We congratulate Stan Wawrinka and Marcos Baghdatis on reaching the final,” said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free. “This year will mark only the third time in 14 years that neither Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic will win the magnificent dhow trophy, and we wish both players well in what is certain to be an absorbing match.”
“It is disappointing that Nick Kyrgios had to retire from his match, but we look forward to welcoming him back to Dubai,” said Tournament Director Salah Tahlak. “We nevertheless have two deserving finalists and can look forward to an exciting match on Saturday and the crowning of a new Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships winner,” said Tournament Director Salah Tahlak.
The doubles finals will be contested by the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli / Andreas Seppi and Feliciano Lopez / Marc Lopez of Spain.

It's been a great battle from Marcos but he finally got defeated by S. WAWRINKA 6-4 7-6. The 2nd set tiebreak has been so tight...with 15 points to 13 for Wawrinka.
Congratulations Marcos for this amazing week in Dubai. We do hope you can keep up with those great results and still injury free. You're gonna bounce up in the singles ranking and that's just too great!!
