www.baghdatis.com/articlecategories/view/calendar-1Marcos will participate in the following tournaments: 1. San Jose (February 9-15) 2. Memphis (February 16-22) 3. Delray Beach (February 23 - March 1) It's Marcos' maiden appearance at all three. Seems that he chose to play in the States (for the first time) all the warm-up tournaments for the two big events in Indian Wells and Miami.

Marcos is currently ranked #98. It's obvious that he's trying hard to make the cut-off for the main draw in Indian Wells and Miami. Last year, it was around #78 at both tournaments. Hopefully he can manage to avoid playing qualies. Needless to say that his task will be increasingly difficult to enter the main draw in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid. He must be ranked around #45 by mid-April, since the draws at those tournaments are significantly smaller... On the other hand, I'm very happy seeing Marcos chose to play in the States, instead of Europe, in February. This does mean that he most likely won't play the Davis Cup tie in Cyprus the week before Indian Wells. It was about time for him to stop thinking stupidly nationalistically and take care of his personal career. Fortunately, the staff at TeamLagardere promote such behaviour. A good example was Richie's wise decision not to play the Olympic Games last year. I liked that a lot.

Kooyong line-up has changed after Blake's and Gulbis's withdrawals. Carlos Moya and Fernando Verdasco will replace them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.tennisweek.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=6623848Verdasco, Moya Join Kooyong Field By Tennis Week Wednesday, December 10, 2008A pair of Spaniards — Davis Cup hero Fernando Verdasco and former World No. 1 Carlos Moya — have replaced Ernests Gulbis and James Blake in the AAMI Classic field in Kooyong, set for January 14-17. The pair join Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Fernando Gonzalez, Marin Cilic, Marat Safin and Marcos Baghdatis in the eight-man exhibition event. Gulbis, who was announced in the original field at an October launch by tournament director, Colin Stubs, has curiously entered the ATP Heineken Open in Auckland the same week. Organizers of the Kooyong exhibition event said: "It is still unclear as to how and why this occurred and even his management, Octagon, is unable to clarify the matter. Gulbis is on holidays and therefore uncontactable, but his manager believes he may have just changed his mind and entered the event on his own. Once having done so, there would be serious consequences if he withdrew to play elsewhere." Stubs said he was "disappointed" by Gulbis' departure and assumes it "was a change of heart" that prompted the Roland Garros quarterfinalist to withdraw. Blake withdrew from the field in "what appears to be a managerial miscommunication," Kooyong tournament officials said. The 16th-ranked Verdasco, currently dating reigning Roland Garros champ Ana Ivanovic, partnered Feliciano Lopez to win the doubles point then clinched Spain's third Davis Cup championship with a thrilling five-set victory over Jose Acasuso in Spain's 3-1 triumph over host Argentina in Mar del Plata. Verdasco reached a career-high rank of No. 11 in July and won his second ATP title in Umag. Moya, the 1997 Australian Open runner-up to Pete Sampras, reached the finals this year in Costa do Sauipe and Bucharest. He has finished in the top 50 for 13 straight years — a record among active players. Play begins on Wednesday, January 14 and concludes with the finals on Saturday, January 17.

yellowtennisball.com/mt_news_detail.php?news_id=3706 AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINALIST BAGHDATIS TO PLAY ITCDecember 13, 2008Delray Beach, FL (December 13, 2008)- Marcos Baghdatis, the exuberant Cypriot who reached the 2006 Australian Open final, has included the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) on his 2009 schedule. Baghdatis will join Mardy Fish, Tommy Haas and the Bryan Brothers at the 17th annual ATP World Tour event that will be played February 21-March 1, 2009 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center. Baghdatis and his million dollar smile burst on the world stage in 2006 with a run to the Australian Open final that included wins over No. 3 Andy Roddick, No. 8 Ivan Ljubicic and No. 4 David Nalbandian. He also won his first ATP title in Beijing, reached the Wimbledon semifinals and spent 13 weeks ranked in the Top 10, reaching No. 8 on August 28, 2006. "I'm very excited to be playing in Delray Beach for the first time," said Baghdatis, who is one of 13 players featured on the 2009 ATP calendar. "I've heard nothing but great things about the tournament, fans and the city. I look forward to competing against the other top players." Since his breakout season, Baghdatis has won a second ATP title (Zagreb), and reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2007. He was slowed in 2008 by two injuries, but overall the 23-year-old has produced a stellar 112-68 ATP record and earned more than $2.7 million in prize money. "Marcos' enthusiasm is infectious and our crowds are going to have a blast with him," said tournament director Mark Baron. "Many consider him to be the most entertaining player in the game. To be able to see his athleticism and gamesmanship in a stadium this intimate is going to be something really special." The complete Delray Beach ITC entry list for the 32-player draw will be announced in January. Included are two wild cards that Baron continues to hold. www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/dec/16/baghdatis-to-play-in-regions-event/Baghdatis to play in Regions eventBy Phil Stukenborg (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal Tuesday, December 16, 2008 Marcos Baghdatis, an Australian Open finalist in 2006 and a former top 10 tennis player in the world, is joining next February's 32-player field at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships at The Racquet Club. Baghdatis has accepted a wild card into the newly designated, upgraded '500' Series event on the ATP Tour. He'll join a field that includes two top 10 players -- No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro and No. 10 James Blake -- and former top 10s Tommy Haas, a three-time Memphis champion, and Lleyton Hewitt, a former world No. 1. Baghdatis, 23, a charismatic player from Cyprus known for his powerful forehand and high-risk shotmaking, reached the 2006 Australian Open final with wins over third seed Andy Roddick and fourth seed David Nalbandian. He was a Wimbledon semifinalist a few months later, beating Andy Murray and Hewitt before being ousted by Rafael Nadal. Injuries have slowed Baghdatis in recent years, including ankle problems in 2008 that forced him to miss numerous ATP Tour events. As a result Baghdatis, who will be making his first trip to Memphis, has seen his ranking dip to 98th.

After Delray Beach, Marcos will be coming to Cyprus for his Davis Cup duties. www.daviscup.com/ties/tie.asp?tie=100012306======================================================== Hopefully Marcos won't pick up an injury during the three matches he's obliged to play in Cyprus. Last April, Marcos picked up an ankle injury (while playing football, according to rumours). Yiannos Hatjigeorgiou let Marcos play injured. Cyprus beat Slovenia; Cypriot newspapers praised Marcos for his patriotism. It took Marcos six weeks to recover from his injury and "play" Roland Garros. Hope things turn out better this time.
